Dear Editor,Steven Guilbeault of Greenpeace was widely
quoted in the news media during the United Nations meeting on climate change in
Montreal. He said "Global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can
mean wetter, that's what we're dealing with." Steven sees that as justification
for Canada’s involvement in Kyoto which “sets
the stage for deep emission reductions in the future". Frankly, Steven’s
waffling with respect to what global warming means does not provide any
confidence we know how to control it.
Yesterday, Professor Barendregt told us “Things will almost certainly switch back to glacial conditions although we don’t know exactly when. We’re just into a warm interglacial period”. (“Discovery: U of L professor helps determine age of stone tools”, 05/12/17, A1.)
Today, David Suzuki tells us the United Nations Montreal Action Plan “sets the stage for negotiating bigger emissions cuts needed to prevent dangerous climate change”.
Environmental organizations and governments are rushing to turn down the global thermostat. Wouldn’t we be wise to figure out how it works before we start frantically and aimlessly twisting the dial?
